What are the benefits of using Digital Excitation Systems

What are Digital Excitation Systems?

The digital excitation system is a synchronous part of a generator that generates electrical energy. This digital excitation system is responsible for controlling and protecting this synchronous machine if it finds itself under any stress or faulty conditions.

For instance, when in power plants, a sluggish terminal voltage recovery will affect the motor and contribute in breaking the system down. It is here, that the digital excitation systems come into play and improve performance. They are customized in mini sizes for small machines and in large sizes for big machines; employed majorly in power generating plants, namely, Hydropower plants, thermal power plants and the likes.

These basically are modern voltage control systems that bring in use power and flexibility for controlling machines.

A Digital Excitation System is based on Digital Signal Processor (DSP) based control device. These are user-friendly and easily accessible, with uncomplicated processes to operate and minimum possibility of trial and error.
They operate from a few MVA/ampere to more than 2100MVA/10000Ampere.

Why use Digital Excitation Systems?

They are extremely stable than the older excitation systems that were used in power plants that use state of the art integral power stabilizing system. This happens by adjusting the field current extremely fast to the changing operational conditions.

The operating interface and parameters of a digital excitation system are much safer and effective, in contrast to its older counterparts. It has various inbuilt protection functions in the controller that primarily stop and help reduce system damage.

Digital excitation system also improves reliability and stability of the system by coordinating dual settings groups to protect the generation system conditions.
The DSP-based control system has an AC power which is tapped off from the stepped down generator terminal which is rectified and then fed to the generator; therefore, controlling the generator voltage output.

The Digital Excitation System is a much more comprehensive way to control voltage and Amtech Power provide safely customized and properly engineered digital excitation systems in India.
